Origins of a “Seagull Day”
One funny true story from the history of sports occurred during a baseball game in 1951 between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. During the game, a seagull flew into the stadium and began to fly around the field. The players and umpires found it amusing and stopped to watch the bird as it flew around the stadium.
But the seagull had other plans. It swooped down and snatched a ball out of the air that was headed for the outfield. The crowd erupted with laughter and applause as the bird flew off into the distance with the ball in its beak. The umpire declared the ball “in play” and play resumed.
