Legendary basketball coach Gregg Popovich, Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki, and Miami Heat icon Dwyane Wade are among the finalists for the 2023 class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, according to the official announcement made on Thursday.
Popovich, who has spent over two decades coaching the San Antonio Spurs, is considered one of the most successful and respected coaches in NBA history. With five NBA championships, three NBA Coach of the Year awards, and a 1,400-plus win record, Popovich’s impact on the game is undeniable.
Nowitzki, a 14-time NBA All-Star and the 2007 NBA MVP, spent his entire 21-year career with the Dallas Mavericks. He led the team to its first-ever NBA championship in 2011 and is considered one of the greatest international players of all time.
Wade, a three-time NBA champion and 13-time NBA All-Star, played 16 seasons in the league, mostly with the Miami Heat. He helped the Heat win their first NBA championship in 2006 and was named the 2006 NBA Finals MVP.
The 2023 class of the Hall of Fame will be announced during the NCAA Men’s Final Four in April. The inductees will be honored in a ceremony in Springfield, Massachusetts in September.
The finalists will be evaluated by a 24-person honors committee, which includes basketball legends, executives, and media members. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, a player must have been retired for at least three seasons.
